The purveyors of faux rock over at Activision and RedOctane finally decided to let the cat out of the bag on several of their not-so-secret projects this morning, including the first official details on DJ Hero, Guitar Hero 5, and Band Hero.
Interestingly, the press release makes no mention of the purported mash-ups between rock and hip-hop mentioned in early DJ Hero rumors, nor does it say anything about the supposed inclusion of guitar controller support for competitive DJ vs. guitar battles. It does, however, include the first-ever image of the game's turntable peripheral (pictured above), as well as a brief rundown of the genres of music you can expect from DJ Hero -- electronica, dance, hip-hop, R&B, and Motown.
If you're among the crowd that prefers mind-bending guitar solos over remixed Motown, then you're probably more interested in the differences between Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero. Guitar Hero 5 will still feature the full array of instruments introduced in Guitar Hero World Tour -- essentially Guitar Hero 4 -- but adds to the previous game's formula by allowing players to swap instruments, difficulty levels, and even jump in or out of songs totally on the fly. Band Hero, on the other hand, is the series' first stab at a family-friendly rhythm game -- featuring "top-40 hits" and an E10+ rating from the ESRB.
The big questions remain unanswered, though. Will we see any interoperability between the DJ Hero controller and Guitar Hero proper, or will the two remain wholly separate for the time being? What about the compatibility of DLC from Guitar Hero World Tour? And what sort of tricks does Band Hero have up its sleeve to level the playing field against the similarly kid-appropriate Lego Rock Band? Hopefully at least a few of these mysteries will be unravelled come E3 next month.
so what do we think?
any more info gratefully received.
